Description Decision
Support System (DSS) for Irrigation Management is an advanced tool based
on Geographical Information System (GIS) software and numerical modelling
techniques. The models are basically an integration of a surface water
simulation model (MIKE 11) and a groundwater model (MIKE SHE). DSS
supports the manager of irrigation projects to ensure improved water
management. Performance of an irrigation project rarely attains its design
potential. A few of the possible reasons include insufficient water at the
source, inadequate conveyance of the irrigation system, deterioration of
the irrigation system, incorrect operation of structures, excess
withdrawal at head end or simply social conflicts. In order to maintain an
efficient operation & management practice, tool like DSS is essential.
The pilot DSS delivered to Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) by
SWMC has been developed for U2 system in the Meghna Dhonagoda Irrigation
Project (MDIP) to test its applicability in irrigation system management.
The pilot DSS delivered by SWMC will help in irrigation management but it
will need updating with latest filed information and field
validation. This project aims at updating the DSS for the irrigation
season of 2000 and validating the DSS for the irrigation season of 2001 in
order to assess its usefulness. DSS is suitable for assessing irrigation
scheme performance, which is based on simulated soil moisture content
distributed in time and space. Reasons for not achieving the full
potential of the irrigation system can be identified and remedial measures
can be taken accordingly. The input to and the output from the model
through DSS are :
