River Bank Protection Project

Location

55 km upstream of the Jamuna Bridge at Jamuna River

Type of Project

Forecast of  hydraulic and morphologic condition

Period of Study

January, 2001 - March, 2001

Client

Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB)

Description

Because of the imminent threat of Brahmaputra-Jamuna for major erosion damage and the possibility of merger of the Bangali River and Brahmaputra-Jamuna by breaching of embankment, priority right bank protection work was constructed atdKalitola\Sariakandi\Mathurapa-ra (Site B1). BWDB assigned SWMC for carrying out the annual update of the Site B1 model and issuing forecast for 2001 monsoon. In addition it also covers morphological impacts of the six proposed spurs along the Jamuna right bank.

The model was utilised to show higher percentage of flow in the western anabranch compared to the eastern one during the late monsoon, which create prominent scour at the tip of the Kalitola groyne. This scour does not backfill till the end of the monsoon. Despite the fact that the proposed six spurs (2 at upstream of Hasnapara and 4 at downstream of Mathurapara) protect bank from erosion, they may invite more flow to the western anabranch (due to enhanced channel scour which is very common in case of spur construction and extreme flood).
