TWO-Dimensional Morphological Modelling for SIRAJGANJ Bank Protection Work, Site B2

Location

Sirajganj District

Type of Project

Forecast of critical hydraulic and morphologic condition for River Bank Protection Work

Period of Study

January, 2001 - June, 2001

Client

Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB)

Description

The Jamuna is a braided river characterized by frequent changes in planform. Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) with IDA credit undertook the River Bank Protection Project (RBPP) in Jamuna River in 1996. The bank protection work constructed at Sirajganj was completed in 1998 under contract B2 of RBPP. Since then Brahmaputra Right Embankment (Specialized) O & M Division, BWDB has been monitoring and maintaining the completed bank protection works along Jamuna River. The existing two-dimensional morphological model has been in use since 1998. BWDB assigned SWMC for carrying out the annual update of the Site B2 model and for issuing of forecast for 2001 monsoon.

In this study the existing model has been updated and validated on the basis of recent data and applied for issuing of forecast of probable short-term critical hydraulic and morphological situation in the ensuing 2001 monsoon for planning and designing of operation and maintenance of bank protection works.

The morphological evaluation of the new river bank protection structures, constructed in the year 2000 by BWDB in the upstream reach of Shailabari groyne, was also studied in the present application of the model.
