Description The Gorai is the major spill channel of the Ganges River flowing through the southwest region of Bangladesh. It is observed in the recent years that the off take of the Gorai remains dry during the December-May period and the supply of fresh water is completely cut-off. This has caused a serious socio-ecological problem in the area. In search of a sustainable solution, the Government of Bangladesh in 1998 with the help of development partners initiated the Gorai River Restoration Project (GRRP) with strategic dredging for two years.
Along with other components, the project has one more important aspect of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) study due to the implementation of the dredging scheme. In this connection SWMC is providing the Mathematical model support related to the flow dynamics, salinity intrusion and morphological assessment. The existing South East Region Model of SWMC has been updated and improved with additional field surveyed data of 1998 dry period. The updated model has been applied to support the study for the following components of EIA:
