Quality Control of PPW for 3rd year Dredging in GRRP

Location

Southwest region of Bangladesh

Type of Project

The Pilot Priority Works: Quality Control is to support the quality control team of the Engineer, PPW-QC, in the successful implementation of the 2 years pilot dredging by monitoring the progress and performance of the dredging operation and also assessing the hydro-morphological performance of the dredged channel

Period of Study

2000-2001

Client

Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB)

Description

The priority works will consist of dredging the Gorai River over a length of 30km, starting from the off-take of the Gorai river, on a pilot basis. The program is designed to stimulate the river in a strategic manner, at the right time and right place, in order to use the river’s own energy and enable it to cut a channel during the following monsoon. The implementation of these works would also provide the necessary data for designing a long-term solution for restoration of the Gorai River and for quantifying the impact of fresh water flows during the dry season. The main efforts of the priority works would be to cut out a channel during the falling stage of river flows. The aim of the PPW is to achieve a channel of sufficient size to pass a required flow.

Surface Water Modelling Centre (SWMC) has been engaged by BWDB as a member of the Quality Control Team of the Pilot Priority Works and will assist the Engineer in supervising the dredging activities. SWMC will also prepare an outline retrievable computer database for easy access of the data and will run effect of the dredging.
