Mr. Shah-Newaz obtained his M.Sc. Engineering in Industrial and Civil Engineering from Astrakhan Technical University, Russia (former USSR) in 1981. Later on in 1996 he obtained his Master of Engineering in Water Resources Development from Asian Institute of Technology (AIT),Thailand.
Mr. Newaz has more than 25 years of professional experiences in mathematical modelling, consultancy and research in field of water resources in Bangladesh and abroad. He has over 20 years of experience in project based studies in the field of computational hydraulics, flood management, irrigation and drainage management, groundwater development, sediment transport, salinity intrusion and tidal river management. He worked as Team Leader for various types of mathematical modelling, development of National Water Resources Database (NWRD) and computer system networking under National Water Management Plan project (NWMP). He, for the 1st time, introduced tidal basin concept in his research study on development of cohesive sediment modelling in Solmari-Gengrail system, subsequently involved as Team Leader in a project for the monitoring of Tidal River Management (TRM) in KJDRP. He was involved in the creation of computer cell in the Prime Ministers Office, Bangladesh, worked as System Analyst/Key person of the Cell for a period of one year in 1989. He worked as the founding member of the Surface Water Simulation Modelling Program (SWSMP) which has now as Institute of Water Modelling. He also worked as the founding member of the Master Plan Organization (MPO), now Water Resources Planning Organisation (WARPO) and pioneered mathematical modelling in Bangladesh outputs were extensively used for National Water Plan. He is a fellow of Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) and member of Bangladesh Computer Society (BCS). He is also a member of AIT Alumunai Association and Soviet Alumunai Association.
Mr. Shah-Newaz has participated in lot of trainings as resource person as well as trainee in country and outside of Bangladesh. He received specialized training in flood modelling and sediment transport modelling at Danish Hydraulic Institute, Denmark. His research interests include regional level hydrological modelling using the remote sensing data online. He attended a number of national and international seminars and conferences; authored more than 20 technical papers. He has conducted several training programs in Bangladesh and abroad, organized workshops and chaired technical session in international seminar.
