Dr. Ali Muhammad Omar Faruque completed his Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Fisheries from Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh, Bangladesh in 1985, Master of Science (M. Sc.) Fisheries in Fisheries Biology and Limnology from Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh, Bangladesh, 1990 and Ph.D in Aquaculture from Bangladesh.

He has been built a professional background as a Natural Resources Management Expert at the Institute of Water Modelling (IWM) since December 2022 to till date, specializing in water and fisheries resources. With a strong foundation in fisheries and wetland ecosystem, Dr. Faruque had played a crucial role in projects implementation as Project Director from May 2022 to November 2022 for the project of “Comprehensive Feasibility Study for Sustainable Restoration and Protection of Wetlands (Haor, Baor, Beels and Connected River etc.) in different Hydrological Regions of Bangladesh”. He also acted as a Project Director, Supervise and Participate in the preparation of Master Plan for restoration and management of Ashurar beel ecosystem considering water retention and connectivity, sanctuary, communication, ecotourism development etc. with engineering and biological interventions. As a Project Director, Supervise and Participate in the preparation of Master Plan for restoration and management of Atrar beel, Boringi Beel, Dharakuli Beel, Burirchara Baor, Kujin Beel and Raktadaha Beel ecosystem with engineering and biological interventions. Supervision and participation in Strategic Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (SESIA) for preparing Master Plan of the wetlands. Supervision and coordination for Multi – criteria analysis and SWOT analysis to identify the best suitable options. Guide the consultant to develop the methodology for the conservation of deep pool and establishment of fish sanctuaries within beels/baors/khals. Acted as a Project Director from April 2018 to June 2020 for the project of “Study on Interaction between Haor and River Ecosystem including Development of Wetland Inventory and Sustainable Wetland Management Framework”. Supervision and coordination to draw an outline of ecosystem restoration and livelihood improvement plan of Haor area. Supervision and coordination to prepare a complete inventory and map of all wetlands of the country including ponds up to 25 decimals. Supervision and coordination of LiDAR survey that had been done in 120 sq. km. area adjacent to Tanguar Haor. Coordination and conducting baseline data collection on agriculture, fisheries, environment, socio-economic condition. Coordination and conducting survey on biodiversity, fisheries, agriculture, forest and livelihood of wetland areas. Supervision and cooperation to prepare management framework that had been outlined considering biodiversity, fisheries, agriculture, forest and livelihood development. Supervision and supporting to classify the wetlands of Bangladesh according to their hydrological functions, important ecosystem, ecosystem services, physiographic characteristics, and demography. Guide to develop an inventory of wetlands along with different categorical contour maps. Guide and monitor the comprehensive stakeholder consultations to find out gap(s) and incorporating their suggestions for successful completion of the wetlands inventory. Supervision and coordination for Multi – criteria analysis and SWOT analysis to identify the best suitable options for wetland management. He acted as Assistant Director for the project “Bangladesh Marine Fisheries Capacity building Project, Department of Fisheries” from July 2015 to April 2017 for assisting to assess fish stocks of Bay of Bengal through research vessels. Cooperation and monitoring of fishing vessel movement in the Bay of Bengal. Cooperation and monitoring fish catch data collection at the landing center of coastal areas of Bangladesh. Arranging workshops, meeting, seminar and other fisheries extension occasions. He acted as Focal Person & Assistant Director in the Department of Fisheries from January 2011 to June 2015 for preparing of fish seed production annual work plan of Government’s Fish Seed Multiplication Farms and baors. Supervision of quality fish seed production in Government’s Fish Seed Multiplication Farms. Conducting training on climate change in fisheries and adaption techniques. Assessment of climate change effect on fisheries and conducting adaptation program. Preparation of Climate Change mainstreaming guideline for Freshwater Fisheries, Aquaculture and Coastal & Marine Aquaculture. Development of training modules and delivering training to farmers and DoF Officers. Demonstration CCA options of aquaculture and prepare & distribute IEC materials. He acted as Senior Upazila fisheries Officer in the Department of Fisheries (DoF) from April 2005 to December 2010 with the role of Survey and assessment of fisheries resources at Upazila level. Guide and supervise transfer of need-based aquaculture technologies to the farmer’s community and facilitate in supplying and distribution of aquaculture inputs to the farmers for establishing demo farms to extend technology.
