PROFILE DESCRIPTIONS

Academic Chronology

Dr. Md. Mostafizur Rahman received his PhD in 2021 from IWFM, BUET, Dhaka, for research on water security risk assessment in a fluvio-tidal setting through an integrated system dynamics model, funded by the UK FCDO under the REACH Programme, led by Oxford University. He earned an M.Sc. in Water Resources Engineering in 2015 from DWRE, BUET, with a thesis on modeling flood inundation of the Jamuna River; a B.Sc. in Civil and Environmental Engineering in 2011 from SUST, Sylhet; and a Professional Diploma in Sanitation in 2023 from IDM, KUET.

Professional Track Record

Dr. Md. Mostafizur Rahman is currently working as a Climate Change Expert (March 2024 – Present) at the Institute of Water Modelling (IWM), Dhaka, focusing on climate vulnerability and risk assessment and mapping, as well as the impacts of climate change on water and the environment. His work includes ESIA, ESMP, ESMoR preparation, climate data analysis, GCM data bias correction and downscaling, and field data collection through FGDs and KIIs. Previously, he served as a Post-Doctoral Researcher (Sep 2023 – Feb 2024) at IWFM, BUET, researching coastal system resilience for the UKRI GCRF Living Deltas Hub Project. From Jan 2021 to Aug 2023, he worked as a Water Resources Engineer at BISR Consultants Ltd. for the JICA-funded SSWRDP-2 Project, implemented by LGED, where he managed 18 sub-projects involving PRA, feasibility studies, hydraulic structure design, and BOQ preparation. He was an Environmental Specialist (May – Dec 2020) at conducting solid waste management surveys for climate resilience and education projects funded by world Bank. As a Ph.D. Fellow (May 2016 – Apr 2020) under the REACH Programme at IWFM, BUET, he developed a system dynamics model for water security assessment in coastal Bangladesh. Earlier, he worked as a Research Associate/Assistant (Jun 2014 – Apr 2016) at IWFM and DWRE, BUET, on international projects, performing hydrological modeling, climate downscaling, and flood risk assessment, and briefly served as a part-time Lecturer (Feb – Jul 2016) at World University, Bangladesh.
